I have been trying to get the members list on the front page to display the forum profile pictures. So far I have only been able to get the main site profile pictures to work in both.

For this you need to login to the main site in the subscriber login: section. If you already signed up for the forum it uses the same login and password.

If you login and go to the bottom of the profile section and add a photo there it will show up everywhere, members list and forums.

If you add a photo in the forums only, then the currently the image will appear in the forums only, but not in the members list.
