I remember the early books well. Here's the ones that got me started when I was a kid.

Hehe, those books were from the late 70's early 80's. I got my basic set with the red book around 1981/82.

Yeah! I played D&D by myself at first cause I didn't know anyone else who played. I think I was 11. At the time, I didn't realize the conflict of interest in being a player AND DM! No role playing, but, a lot of dice rolling. As I recall, the basic set came with dice and a white wax crayon to color in the numbers.

Talking about playing on your own. Around the same time I was crazy about the fighting fantasy books.

These two I remember most of all, I tried to write my own complete with illustrations when I was about 10, unfortunately my english teacher didn't care for them at all.

WOW! Deathtrap Dungeon was also the name of a solitaire adventure in a game I used to play called Tunnels and Trolls!
