Adrian: Site looks great!

I am trying to see what kind of interest there might be in a new Marvel superheroes game in Citrus Heights. I have a roommate(SEAN) who is a great GM, but, we don't know anyone else who plays (Venger just posted on another site that he may be interested). We are not planning anything soon, but, if anyone is into actual role playing and not just a hack and slash game, please post here and let us know. We would be hosting the game at our residence and are looking for one or two experienced gamers who can consistently commit to a game. At least once, maybe twice a month?! Any input people have will be welcome. We may just decide to join another game if it is more convenient for all concerned, so, let us know if there is an existing game around here. Thanks a lot.

Adrian: Thanks for letting me post here!

Me me me!!  I will play any super hero type RPG :P  I LOVE the actual Role Playing aspect of RPGs.  But due to having to travel so far, Ideally the game would be Sat. morning to evening rather than going late into the night.

Well, the GM (SEAN) is cool with the idea, but, he is kinda dragging his feet. You, me, and Venger as PCs. Have you played Marvel before?

I thought about it..but I dunno, having super powers doesn't really interest me all that much in a group setting. It may totally work really well, but I see superhero games as a 1 player type deal. :P Especially when you want the enemies to have super powers too, or be on your level for some kind of competition..but then it just becomes cheesy. :P

That's just how I see it personally though. Could be totally wrong.

Actually, I was directing my question to her. No biggie. But, since you commented, I will too. It seems like the evil superpowered people are always a little more powerful than the good guys! Why? (Rhetorical question) Typically in our games there really isn't THAT much combat anyway. Our games are really driven by WHATEVER the PCs want to do with their time. We have had several gaming sessions in a row where there was no combat at all. Sometimes PCs just wanna PARTY!!!!!

I wasn't answering a question, I was just saying I thought about playing in the Marvel thing. :P

As for PCs just wanting to party…I'm someone who likes to have some kind of focus in my games. Roleplaying through having a direction to move it. Discussing strategies. Trying to solve puzzles. Talking to NPCs to get information out of them. I've never been one to just sit back and be casual when playing..unless we just finished some adventure and are gonna take an hour to just screw around in town or something. Then I can figure out what I wanna do on my character sheets and whatnot, and maybe drink some Pepsi while people have 1 on 1 time with the DM or something.

I haven't played Marvel before but I can pick up any game system.  I play all kinds at game cons.  But I HAVE played other super hero game systems such as Mutants and Masterminds and Heroes 5th Ed.  I love the role playing aspect of being super heroes, mechanics I can pick up.  So if the game is on, I'm up for it.  Just need to know in advance when we might be starting because I tend to plan my weekends a little in advance :)

well, if you played heroes, I think the Marvel system will be easy for you. Eight stats (Sean uses Dex as well as Agility to keep them separate) All rolls are based on your stats plus skill modifiers. Pretty basic stuff. Plus, Sean doesn't get all bogged down in the rules. He'll just tell you to make a ^whatever^ roll on your percentile dice. You add in any modifiers, and, give him the final result. Not much of that going on though. 95% role playing/5% game mechcanics.

Nothing solid yet, but, I will keep you posted (^chortle^)

Well, I see I shoulda been a little more clear. I shoulda said "sometimes our characters just wanna party." Sean prefers sober players. We all feel it keeps the game more realistic.

Didn't mention players drinking. I just don't tend to play characters that like to waste a lot of time..at least not in a group. It's fine if there's one wild PC in the group who likes to crack jokes and goof around, but at least things can still get done. If there's a day when the entire group is partying though, I feel things don't get done. If anything I'd probably have my character try to find something to do.

Hey, sometimes after a particularly hectic combat or something, characters need to blow off steam just like real people. When we are "in character" and someone suggests a BBQ or whatever, then yeah, we BBQ. You can't ALWAYS be a hard charger. Plus, it's a great opportunity to develop friendly relationships with the NPCs. I suppose a person could spend most of their time doing whatever they want, even productive plot line development stuff.  It's just not typical PC behavior (unless you're a Captain America type or someone with the leadership talent). It leads a lot of PCs and NPCs to want to do things without you because they see you as a bit anti-social or self centered or prima donna like. Every group needs to keep their eye on the prize, but, not every waking minute. Just my opinion.

I also want to note the positives of the all focused people: It keeps the game on track. It is very easy to wander off the plot line if too many people get sidetracked. Here I am playing devil's advocate again, refuting what I just said. But, I DO have to agree with Paranitis. Sometimes things don't get done. It is always good to have SOMEONE keeping the group on track.

Every single gaming group I've ever played with – including at game cons – always get sidetracked.  Part of gaming should be the socializing.  If all we did was get together and play straight the entire time without any side bar laughter, talk of things that interest us, etc., then it would become so boring that eventually everyone would quit the group.  Yes, being focused to get things done is nice….but going over board is just plain boring.

Well, I hate to speak for someone else, but, I think that paranitis meant during the game when we are all in character. He does have a point. I am glad people aren't hesitant to disagree. I may learn something from them.

Yeah, I meant the characters themselves. I have no problem with people socializing in real life outside of the game, as long as they aren't interupting the flow of the game itself.

As far as characters go, there should always be either 1 "crazy" guy who wants to party all the time and be the comic relief..or if everyone else likes to be that character, there should be one "serious" guy who can't stand things that aren't productive. I can play either character.

If everyone is the serious guy, the game gets too technical and boring. If everyone is the crazy guy, it's easier for the game to disolve into a lot of out-of-character stuff.
