I got to take a look at PHB2 that came out yesterday. Quite a few races and classes in there, most of the book is almost exclusively about those.

Races:

  • Deva
  • Gnome
  • Goliath
  • Half-Orc
  • Shifter

 Classes:

  • Avenger
  • Barbarian
  • Bard
  • Druid
  • Invoker
  • Shaman
  • Sorcerer
  • Warden

There are quite a few new magic items etc, and maybe 6/10 useful feats that aren't exclusive to the new classes and races. Lots of rituals and some addendum/corrections to the rules for stealth etc at the end of the book.

It looks like there are some fun things to be had there if you do start a new character. I know Inna originally wanted to be a Druid, but there was no way to play them till now. I think she likes being a Cleric though, and in our game we would be severely compromised without one.

If I wasn't going to be a ranger I think my second choice would be a Warden. A tough defender that takes on bestial and tree like forms. Wouldn't mind a bit of that :)

I will almost certainly get it since I do like a few of the options in there. The book is about the size of the original PHB. I still think I would have prefered the traditional types being in the original PHB and all the new exotic stuff in 2. But maybe I'm just a traditionalist, and I can see why they might want to put a little diversity in both books.

There are a couple of feats I would like for my ranger in there, but there isn't really any real need to buy the book if your not interested in the races and classes listed above.

So they have Tiefling in the core races, but not Aasimar, which is the race that is the "good" version. And in PHB2 they still don't have the Aasimar. Fail #1.

They also didn't bother adding the Monk into the PHB2. Fail #2.

WotC is crap now.

In 4E Devas are mortal beings of celestial origin that are referred to in their homeland as “aasimar”. That's according to the Forgotten Realms campaign guide.

As for the Monk, from what I could tell no one liked the monks, on the WOC forums they are often considered useless and disallowed in many DM's campaigns. I seem to recall Gryvon, Russel and Richard have all voiced that they didn't fit in their campaign worlds. Maybe they were unpopular enough that it was decided to leave them out of 4E. Just a thought which seems reasonable to me.

Yes. They ripped out the 3rd Edition Astral Deva, the Dudley Doright angel.

Okay, so the Deva is the Aasimar then.

But I loved the Monk. My favorite character was a Monk. It was an Avariel (Winged Elf) Monk, and I had him demolish my last group I played in years ago.

I ran with this one group of "friends", but I had a feeling they didn't really like me all that much since I seemed to have gotten into the D&D thing later and was always upbeat and happy when the game day was coming, and I could talk constantly about wanting to play more or having ideas for characters..

..anyway, what happen was that I was flying along with the party, and one of the members was riding a Gryphon for some reason (can't remember if it was caught, or bought, or whatever the reason was). I was told that it was acting a little wild and that it might throw the rider, so I flew up to try to help out, the person flying was losing control, the people on the ground suddenly thought I was attacking the one on the Gryphon. I was yelling down that I am just trying to help her control the thing, and they kept trying to attack me.

They were using ranged attacks since I was in the air, but being a Monk as well, I was able to deflect a lot of it. I then proceeded to use my longspear to get dive attacks on them until they were all out cold. I tended to their wounds so they wouldn't die. I stripped them all naked of all their belongings, threw it all into the bags of holding they liked carrying along, and then I tied them all to a tree at the side of a road wearing nothing, and I let their mounts run away.

Being that my Monk was one of those "Vow of Poverty" (and some other vows) flavored Monks, I mostly sold all their stuff and then donated most of the money to churches and orphanages and whatnot. But I also slightly broke my vow of poverty, yet at the same time I don't think I did. Some of the money I used to construct a tower in the middle of a forest that you could only access by flight. It looked like any other tree, just a bit bigger up top, and the inside was nothing special. It was basically a cave on a stick so things couldn't get me.

Stopped playing that character, and stopped playing with that group, and stopped playing all together after that night.

I looked up Monks for 4E. Looks like there is going to be a PHB 3 with complete line of “ki” (eastern power source classes, with the monk being the defining class, pictured prominently on the cover of the book. PHB2 is mostly primal/nature/spirit classes so it kind of makes sense though a bit frustrating when you have to get so many books to have all bases covered.

Looks like the monk and PHB3 will be previewed in May.

@Parinitis: Maybe you should borrow PHB3 when it comes out and give 4E a try Tongue out

Woo!  Looks like there's hope for me to bring up my favourite never-played 3.5 character to 4th!  Snooth, the halfling monk who worships the flying spaghetti monster*.

*- Contrary to popular belief no alcohol was involved in creating this character or concept.  At least not on my part, upon hearing of it or the backstory people often feel the need for a drink and/or bleach to the brain.

Yep, and then May sees the second monster manual, June the Eberron campaign guide, July the Eberron players guide and the Divine Power book, Adventurers Vault #2 in August, September the second DMG, October the Primal Power book…

It just keeps going on and on with adding "Core" books.
